MLLP member Pau Baquero Arnal defended successfully his PhD thesis on “Transformer models for Machine Translation and Streaming Automatic Speech Recognition” at Universitat Politècnica de València on 25 April 2023.
Pau’s work for his dissertation has focused, quoting its abstract, on “two keystone problems for NLP, machine translation (MT) and automatic speech recognition (ASR), and a common deep neural architecture, the Transformer, […] [addressing] applications [such as] news translation or automatic live captioning of television broadcasts, […] [and adapting] the Transformer as a language model for streaming hybrid ASR systems“. His advisors were the MLLP’s Dr Alfons Juan Ciscar and the RWTH i6’s Dr Hermann Ney.

The examining committee for Pau’s PhD defence was made up of Dr Eva Onaindia de la Rivaherrera (Univ. Politècnica de València), Dr Antonio Miguel Artiaga (Universidat de Zaragoza) and Dr Isabel Trancoso (Técnico Lisboa). They awarded Pau’s dissertation the qualification of Excellent.
After his successful PhD defence, Pau has earned the title “Doctor en Informàtica” (PhD in Computer Science) according to the Valencian and Spanish university systems.
